Does anyone recognize this font?:

I mean only the golden letters; not including the wood bits around. Or in case the font doesn’t actually exist, any tips on closely similar fonts would be much appreciated.

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa455/starchild_dreams3/ font.jpg This looks sort of like it, the l is a tiny bit different. I didn’t try it as italic. Your font has a slight slant to it. I don’t know where I got this, I usually go online and look for free font downloads (or maybe some came with photoshop, etc) And some, of course, come with Windows anyway.

That particular wood is typical of antique door panels and shutters found on Zanizibar and in Dar Es Salam.
As to the font, I think you will find that is the interpretation by a local craftsman of some long forgotten font in some old signage or book.

You might have more luck finding something similar if you do some searching, otherwise if that is exactly what you are looking for to design your own.

Try browsing through these sites;

This looks close, but it is not free.

Keith,

Its either

Wurlitzer Pro Bold ( Red Rooster Collection )
Or
Rhode extended Black ( Font Bureau )
or
Tiptoe UltraBlack ( KLTF)
or
Jimbo Std Black ( Linotype )
or
Pepona Bold ( T-26)
or
Lucian Bold ( Tide)
Sphinx RR Inline
orHerkimber Bunrab

The reason I posted soo many, is because the ones above are very similar.

This software gives many options.

Good Luck

I would have suggested Zapf Chancery, but it is very different to your font.

But regarding font identification: The best forum (IMHO) is to ask Whatthefont: http://new.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/

It has two steps: First you can upload your image and it will be tried to identify the font automatically, I changed the contrast of your image and asked Whatthefont, the automatism suggested:
http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/agfa/monotype-corsiva/monotype- corsiva/

But when someone is not satisfied by the answers of the automatism he can ask an audience. 🙂

I thought about the auto font ID places, too, but didn’t know if it would work with an image like that and not actual type.

The great thing at whatthefont is that if one is not satisfied by the automatic identification one can ask real people.

But what is really funny at the wood crafted font is that the "z" is upside down.

Ritchie, did you mix up this question with another one?
