Free Photoshop like program for Macs??

I'm a little stuck.

My school department offered me a free Mac lab (to be used for graphic design), but forgot to include the funds for software.

i don't want to set up the macs to collect dust, so I'm thinking of adapting my curriculum (originally used for CS2 suite) and starting with an image editing software.

Any ideas for free software that is similar to Photoshop? I have a small lab, so 10 copies is all I need.

Idea? I don't think it's a good idea, especially you say you have used Photoshop before. But I read (but won't believe a bit) that there is a freeware called GIMP some believers not only believe it's better than Photoshop but it's similar and even easier than Photoshop etc..

Me? I would suggest to stay far away from it and continue investing your energy mastering your Photoshop skill. Yes, even working with the older Photoshop is still better than damaging someone's dream.

But if you really want free and for MAC or Linux etc. then GIMP could be the one.

Talk to Adobe. They have a very generous academic program.

You must have OS X Snow Leopard or Tiger. Be sure you have X11 (you probably do if you have the original OS DVD).

One good argument for using Gimp is that your students will not be married to Adobe. When they leave school, Gimp will almost certainly be around for a long time, and free.

I don't think Photoshop (or any largely raster editor) is a good tool for graphic design, but if it is all you can teach, then go for it.

Educational discounts for Adobe products are available. If you go for the suite, you have it made. Use the right tool for the job. Look to Illustrator for other than raster work.

Check out The Gimp - this is open source freeware and extremely flexible.
