Moving Selection From Photoshop to Illustrator

I’m trying to drag a selection from Photoshop to Illustrator (I have both programs running). I selected a leaf from a photograph in Photoshop using the magnetic lasso tool and moved it over to Illustrator. The selection moved over fine. However, the leaf is mounted on a white background within the bounding box. How do I get the leaf to be opaque and the rest of the bounding box transparent?
