I’m getting an "unrecognized format" error in trying to bring an OBJ into CS4 that was exported from Maya 8.5. I scrubbed the mesh clean in Maya (no multiple groups, no multiple textures, no nothing except UVs), and I export it, and it won’t load in CS4. I’ve exported the whole scene, and exported the mesh as a selection, and it won’t load.

I’ve created a new scene, made a cube, exported that as an OBJ, and *that* won’t load in CS4. Is there a known issue with Maya OBJ exports, or is this a "reinstall CS4 and hope" situation?

Well, Maya often stores additional info in OBJ files that may need stripping off (OBJs are just ASCII, so any text editor will do). Has been bugging me all my life as a 3D artist… Short of that, I could only think of wrongly associated vertex/ polygon groups. If you can provide a sample, it should be possible to get to the bottom of this.

A reinstall has fixed things (I went ahead and tried that, being the traditional Completely Lame Yet Regrettably Effective solution). Same file, it works now.

And how I love that the uninstall and install both demand that you not run your browser while they grind away for an hour or so…. that makes this oft-suggested solution so much more pleasant.
