Brush Preset always grayed out in CS4

Can someone help me with the Brush Preset in CS4?
I selected a shape and when I go to Edit->Define Brush Preset... it is grayed out.
I tried to go to the brush palette as well and it only lets me redefine a brush, not create a new one.

Has anyone seen this? Any help?

The purpose of Edit->Define Brush Preset... is to turn an active selection in an image to a custom brush.

It turns out the problem was actually that brushes have a max size of 2500 pixels and if your canvas is over that size, it will not allow even a smaller selection to be a brush preset and that is why my Define brush preset was grayed out.

Hmm, it should go by the selection size not the document size. Check your selection feathering (in case that was increasing the selection size).

Thanks Chris, After a little more experimentation with the brush preset I see that it does in fact work by selection size. My selection was just a little too large.

My document is 200 x 300 and the selection is less than that. I tried a line created with a path and then just a little blob created with a brush. The document has one layer. Nothing activates the Define Brush Preset. Some others have found that document or selection size matters when defining a brush and others are like me. Over four years have passed and this has not been fixed?
