TIF can’t be opened Photoshop

I have some TIF files from my predecessor that I can’t open in Photoshop. I tried renaming them to BMP, PSD, PIC, but none of them can be opened with Photoshop. I wonder is there a program to check the meta data and gives hint on the real format? I think these were photos from an unknown digital camera.
