my lasso tool pixelates like stairs when making a diagonal line! - has anyone experianced the same thing or know how to sort this problem?

You could make sure the anti-aliased box is checked in the options bar. This will help with the stair-stepping.

Also, it depends on te resolution you are working at. Selections are pixel based.
