Transparent Foreground Color

I cannot figure out how to make the foreground color transparent for the life of me. In illustrator it is as simple as clicking a premade swatch that is transparent (other than that I dont know how to set it there either.) I mainly want it because I am trying to use the pen tool but a color keeps filling in between the lines. I made an example image below to show you what I mean...

Its driving me nuts cuz I just want a simple solid line and the tutorial I am trying to follow says to use the pen tool.

I think you have the pen on shape layers rather than path. Icons top left.

Ah omg I never knew that existed! The tutorial DID say to use the pen tool to make a path but I just thought it meant line. Thanks so much!

You are welcome. Don't feel bad, it is a common mistake. :-)

slightly off topic but wouldn't a "transparent" foreground color be the eraser? :)
