minimal pixelation @ 72 dpi

Ok, question... How do I create artwork with the most minimal pixelation possible? I am working on some icons for a project right now and I want them to be as sharp as possible at 72 dpi for web display.

What I'm currently doing is creating them in illustrator copying them into photoshop as a 'smart object' and scaling them to the appropriate size and they are still not coming out as I wish them to. It's one thing to show us what you want...but you haven't shown us what you're winding up with.

I do have one suggestion, though...stop using Photoshop as an intermediary and use Illustrator all the way through.

For best results;
You create the artwork at the exact pixel dimension you require when creating it in a bitmap style, or create it in a vector image style and then you can scale it to any pixel size you want with no loss of quality.

Any time you upsample or down sample a bit map image you will change the quality. The amount of change has to do with the amount of scaling (2x, 5x, 10x, 100x, etc)and the type of image data (squares, circles, smooth, sharp corners, patterns, etc). These all scale differently.

If you are up and down sampling in PSCS3, always view your results at 100% zoom to insure a one to one pixel to screen display. Other zoom ratios will change the image pixel data for display only, and will not be an accurate representation of your resampling results.
