Adobe Bridge - Where are the keywords saved?

I always unsure about this...
If i use Adobe Bridge to assign Keywords to Pictures (mostly jpg's) are they saved directly to each of the pictures (which also actually should increase the filesize a little...) or are they saved in a seperate file and therefore all the information would be lost if there is a damage to this particular file(s).
