I'm trying to use the crop command under the image menu on a selection. It apparently has to do with the quick mask method, maybe it's not a normal selection any more.
This is the method I saw here for cropping with a visible mask while maintaing aspect ratio. It's nice to have the red mask to better visualize the final view:
Select all
type "Q" to turn on quick mask
type "control-T" to free transform the selection
hold shift and drag a corner to reduce the same proportioned frame
enter to commit the free transform
type "Q" to exit quick mask mode and convert the mask back into a selection.
pull down Image menu and "crop" is now greyed out???

Are you using the crop tool or the crop command under the image menu? Use the latter to crop a selection.

I meant Quick Mask, not select.
I just type Q to activate and deactivate.
I did the quickselect while an adjustment layer was current. Has the selection become attached to that?
