Adding color highlights to a B&W photo - Design Advice

Not sure if ths is the right place to post this...or this forum is just for tech questions. But the Mac guys told me to come over here... because, uh, there's nobody there.

I need some design advice / inspiration. I have an intermediate knowledge of photoshop...just limited talent! (I can do layers, do masking, and some other stuff)

I have a 70-yr old B&W photo of my Mom from when she was just 3 or 4. For a 4x6 party invitation I would like to add some subtle Tiffany-blue turquoise highlights to the picture. (maybe make the bow Tiffany blue, part of the dress, a border....this is where I need the inspiration).

Any techniques or ideas I could use to layer in this subtle blue hint would be much appreciated!

Thanks...Larry

oh, p.s., if you want to see the actual photo I have it on my web site at <http://www.tak5.com/mom.tif>

p.p.s I am using CS3 on a mac...but I can speak windows too

Just paint in some colour on a copy of the file using a brush with about 50% opacity in overlay mode

ok, so maybe I'm not an intermediate I'm an Photoshop novice...because I didn't think of that. Txs. - Larry

I do a lot of colourising. That is a basic technique but effective on a photo like yours. For more complex jobs you would need to look at selections and/or masks.

Yeah, I've been lucky enough to have talented designers working for me at the office for 10 years implementing my brilliant ideas. Come to think think of it it they were probably *their* brilliant ideas. :-)

I'm really not a fan of this for Wedding Photography. It looks so 1980's. There are programs that will do this for you though. Usually you can just do it in layers and change the opacity. Erase the part of the color layer that you don't want.

You just stumbled in the wrong direction, that's all.

You initially asked your question in the "Adobe Album Starter Edition" forum. "A.A.S.E." is a Windows-only app, and it's also not Photoshop (as in: the full version).

If you'd prefer to hang with the Maccers there's a separate Photoshop (full version) forum for Mac users as well:
