Is this a recent problem?
If so, try deleting your prefs file.
To delete, start PS with shift+alt+ctrl keys held down.
It's a timing thing, if you get it right you will be aked if you want to delete the file, you do, a new one will be created.
If this fails, you can find the file in C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Application
Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings\Adobe PS CS3 prefs.psp.
If you use this method, don't delete the file, just move it to another folder or rename it (change the extension, this will have the same effect) Then at least you will be able to put back/rename it again if you have to. . If this doesn't solve your problem, you can try doing the same with each of the psp files in turn until PS works as it should.

I think I've counted at least 30 different PS problems that all have the same solution. Good grief! Adobe should just automatically delete PS's preferences file every time it starts, and get it over with.

Maybe one of these decades Adobe will learn how to program under Windows.

I think I've counted at least 30 different PS problems that all have the same solution. Good grief! Adobe should just automatically delete PS's preferences file every time it starts, and get it over with.
Maybe one of these decades Adobe will learn how to program under Windows.

When strange start to happen, the prefs file is always the first port of call.
It isn't a solution untill it corrects the OP's problem. The file corruption can be caused in many ways, apps running in the background, AV software, flaky hardware, interuptions when updating, spy and malware, dodgy fonts or plug ins, the list is endless.
You're right though, you don't see as much corrruption in Macs, maybe because Apple have total control as to what goes in their boxes, unlike PC builders.
I've counted 35 BTW ;)

It's not a PC vs Mac thing, it's an Adobe thing. I run somewhere around 30 major apps on my PCs, most of which have their own preferences files, and PS is the one and only program that has these myriad corruption issues. Why? Same reason Adobe can't manage to write a Windows-compliant help system.

They just don't get Windows. They never have.

That's not what I am saying.
Writing an app for Macs is a lot different than writing one for a PC. Just compare the size of the files or DvDs required to install the two platforms, 1 for Mac, 4 for Windows? (Design suite)
There are far more hardware variations/permutations (not all entirely compatable)found in a PC that can be found in a Mac which only has one manufacturer (or licensed subs) that provide the hardware.

They just don't get Windows. They never have.

I have used PS now since version 4 and in all that time had it hang on me twice through corruption. One was caused by a font, the other time, a flaky plug in.(watch it fall over tomorrow after saying that!) I run my PS on its own drive (dual boot SATAs) and nothing else, no internet (network disabled)so no AV software or similar (upgrades are a PITA, the majority of which are to address internet vulnerablities)) to get in the way When the other (non PS) drive is running the show providing internet access etc., and the PS drive is acting as slave, it is then looked after by the "master" drive's AV prog.
