Photoshop 7 with a Celeron processor?

I'm looking at cheap laptops to use while traveling with digital cameras and some of the cheapest use the Celeron processor. Photoshop 7 sez you need a Pentium III or IV processor to run it ... I know they crippled the cache and added other internal limitations to the Celeron to get the cost down but will it run Photoshop 7 or not? I'd think the instruction set is the same as a P III even if the code executes much more slowly ...

Also, any problems or issues with running Photoshop on a laptop with shared video memory (ie, no memory on the video card)?

Yes, it will.

And they don't cripple the cache to get the cost down. It costs MORE to make a Celeron than a Pentium. A Celeron is a Pentium 4, made on the same wafer in the same fab as a Pentium 4, with an extra manufacturing step--part of the cache is destroyed after the chip is fabbed. (Or, if the cache from a P4 chip fails the cache test but passes the other tests, it's packaged and sold as a Celeron.) It's done for marketing reasons. Welcome to the world of commodity manufacturing.

My Celeron 800 runs fine with PS 7 (also shared video memory). Don't use it for huge scans and a lot of layers and ask for a nice gaussian blur... For the basic stuff, it works perfect.

At the moment, there are quite a lot of nice deals with fast laptops of various brands, so price maybe not a problem for faster CPUs.

my Sony Vaio has a Duron 700 and runs PSCS fine.

You need at least 256mb of memory tho.

Get one with a mobile Athlon. Cheaper than a Pentium and not crippled like a Celeron.

Running PS7 on a 500 MHz Celeron, 256 mb ram... works fine, but a little slow when running some of the more complex filters.

I ran PS7 on my iMac G3 400MHz for a long time. That's about the same as a Celeron. Of course, I had it stuffed with 1 GB of RAM - that's very important.

Yeah, it's pretty slow. But it matters what you are doing. If you are doing one picture every now and then - no problem. If you are editing images for 8x10 and smaller - not a problem either.

If you are doing large images and/or many images at a time, you will pull your hair out with a slow computer. When I went pro, I built a P4
3.0 GHz with HT and 1 GB of RAM. I also moved to CS at the same time.
This package is WAY better for processing hundreds of images at once.

So, the question comes down to - how much do you need the computer to do in how much time?

Unfortunately when I bought my comp. I was a little less knowledgeable in regards to RAM ports, etc - so, I'm currently maxed out with two 128 MB sticks of PC133 (sigh!). I am definitely looking to buy (or build) a new one shortly - something with a little more under the hood as I'm finding I'm using my system more for graphics work than the email and "porn" surfing it was intended for. Hopefully I can write off some of the expense as I will be earning income with the new system... Mmmmh, Income.......
