With Photoshop CS2, you click in the menu "Help", then "Updates...", a window "Adobe updater" will open. Click on "Preferences", then choose what you want. I suppose you would uncheck "Automatically check for updates every month".

From the Help menu, click on"Updates...", then it will do a check and after that you can select Preferences.
