Adding a "SOLD" sign

Am new to Photoshop, so please be patient!

I have an image, to which I want to add, in diagonal, a strip (white background, red type) saying "SOLD" - like the estate agents do.

I've no idea how to set about it! How do I combine two images like this?

Open your image, add a white rectangle shape layer across the image at the height you want.
Use the type tool and type sold in red, then position it over the white rectangle.
In the layer palette, with the type layer selected, click the box between the eye and the thumbnail, which will put a chain in there indicating the layers are linked. Then press Ctrl+T, grab a corner of the bounding box, and rotate it to the angle you want, and commit your changes. Click the chain icon to unlink the layers, select the rectangle layer, press Ctrl+t again, and stretch your rectangle out beyond the boundaries of the image.
Done.
