Huge "Photoshop Temp#####" files in Temp directory

I just discovered 15 files, as old as 2+ years, ranging in size from 172-744MB in C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temp. They’re all named "Photoshop Temp#####" (the number part is more digits in some cases). There’s no suffix.

What are these — scratch files? Can I safely delete these?

It sounds as if you had Photoshop crash or close down incorrectly and it didn’t delete the temp files. If Photoshop closes down properly it deletes its temp files. Just delete them yourself.

That’s what I figured, I just wanted to make sure that’s all these files are and that I can safely delete them. Thanks for the feedback.

There is something more sinister, of course, that can result from a "bad shutdown".

The Photoshop Preferences File Can so easily become corrupted. This in turn can cause all sorts of strange problems to occur and really interfere with the correct working of the program.

Allowing PS to shut down correctly is not an option – it’s essential.

I hear you — I’d love for everything to always start up and shut down flawlessly, but there’s such a thing as crashes. Kind of unavoidable.

When I was running PS6 on an old computer, crashes were a frequent fact of life.

Ever since the CS generation (an more up to date computers) I’ve found Photoshop to be extremely stable.

I don’t think CS crashes much on me (though I’m sure it has on occasion) — it’s probably more often Windows that crashes, or power outage, etc.
