Error opening file; message- not compatible with this version

When I try to open a .TIF file I worked on the previous day, I get an error message–Could not open [file name] because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.
Details:
Windows XP
PhotoShop Ver 6.01
Using McAfee Total Protection for Small Business (no Norton) I have checked ‘Maximize backward compatibility’
I have checked ‘Enable advance TIFF save options’ to enable layers. I work over an intranet.
