Curves tutorial

Can someone point me to a good online source for a newbie guide to using curves please?

I've seen a couple of tutorials already, and although they give a step-by-step guide on using curves, there isn't really a good explanation of what is going on, just basically a 'curves by numbers' and when I attempt to adjust my own images I don't really understand the process.

Here's the most concise, simple beginner curves tutorial I've found on the web. You can download the images used and replicate what you're seeing in the tutorial.
