PS7, slices and spacers

I'm cutting up an image into slices and when I divide my last slice into more than 2 parts, my output is totally scrambeled up. However, when I use spacers in the output the problem is gone. how is this possible? I don't understand how a 1px spacer on top of my sliced image fixes the whole thing!
