select all the single pixels in an image?

I need to clean up scanned b/w (1-bit) images by removing small dots. I wonder if there is a way to pick up all the single pixels or 2x2 pixels?

Not sure if it would work, but maybe convert to greyscale and run the dust and scratches filter on it.

I tried that but it also erodes the part I want to keep (with the lightest setting).

If they really are only a pixel or two, try duplicating the image and sliding one layer a pixel or two out of alignment with the one underneath. Play with blend modes to see which hides the most dots while doing the least damage.

TODAYS TIP: Fix Those Stray Pixels Fast!

Sometimes when making a selection with the Magic Wand tool (W) or Color Range command (under the Select menu), Photoshop will leave little stray pixels unselected. You can tell where they are because they appear to twinkle on and off, kind of teasing, nay, taunting you, because your selection is not complete. Luckily, there's a quick way to rein in those renegade stray pixels. Go under the Select menu, under Modify, and choose Smooth. Enter a Sample Radius of 1 pixel and click OK. That will usually do the trick-those stray pixels are now selected.

Thanks for the nice tip. I tried but it adds the 1-pixel strays to the main selection. What I need is to select only the 1 pixel dots or the size I can indicate. I found the OCR program FineReader can delete dots of ~4x4 pixels in size by using Despeckle Images but it deletes more than needed (e.g. the dot in i). If it has size control like deleting only 1x1 pixels or 2x2 pixels, then it would be great. I read FineReader 8 Development Tool Kit can build the size control but I can't find any with the FineReader 8.
