paint selection in quick mask mode

Hi

can some one tell me if the following sequence is correct?

I open my picture

I pres the button that has the flyout - edit in quick mask mode and the button turns "pink"

I then use my brush to draw over the image.

I then re press the button which now has the flyout - edit in standard mode

I expect to see the walking ants designating a selection but I don't.

According the the cs bible - only cs! I should see the area.

Can someone tell what I'm missing?

the marching ants show the 50% delimitation of a selection are you sure something is at least 50% selected?

You've lost me. Where is this button that says Edit in Quickmask Mode? Must be in a version I don't have. Just press Q to get in and Q again to get out and get the marching ants.

EDIT: Ah, I see. I knew about those buttons but never use them. Are you painting with 100% Opacity (as CN hints)?

Thanks, a whole afternoon spent on the learning curve, my opacity was at 40% not sure what delimitation of a selection means but the learning curve is still there!

Think about it this way...selections are pixel based, so if you have a lower opacity, the selection is "partial". Things that are less than 50% selected won't show the marching ants. If you do a gradient (fade) in a Quickmask you will start to grok what it's about.
