Recently, Photoshop has started hanging when I try to open a new file or resize an existing one, so is currently about as useful as a box of chocolate spanners. All menu items, except certain items on the View menu are greyed out, I cannot even close the prog using the X in the top right corner. Task manager says Photoshop is running as opposed to not responding.

I have not changed the hardware and the only new software to be installed are virus checkers (these give conflicting reports, e.g. Norton detected Bugbear. Stop-Sign said it had Iframe.exe and Swire.11384 Trojans but Norton did not detect these) and Windows updates. I have also had blue screens (not in Photoshop specifically) with Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap errors. Anyone had this in Photoshop? Any idea what’s causing it? Is it virus related? Also Adobe Premier shuts down for no apparent reason.

You may want to download and run

Stinger (McAfee virus check) http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

CWShredder direct download:
http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

and if these fail get from moosoft.com another virus checker

Most likely, Photoshop has not hung or crashed at all–but the dialog boxes are off the screen and you can’t see them. You can reset the position of all dialog boxes using the button in the Preferences command.

I have not changed the hardware and the only new software to be installed are virus checkers (these give conflicting reports, e.g. Norton detected Bugbear. Stop-Sign said it had Iframe.exe and Swire.11384 Trojans but Norton did not detect these) and Windows updates.

Different antivirus companies give the same virus different names. For example, Swen and GIBE-F are the same virus, Novarg and Netsky are the same virus, and so on.

I don’t trust Norton AV, not one bit, nosirree. You can do an online virus check for free at

If you are infected–which sounds quite likely–the Housecall Web-based AV system will get rid of your problem(s).
