tiff files - layer functions greyed out

585 views5 repliesLast post: 3/24/2005
I scan a logo and create a TIFF file. When I open this TIFF file with photoshop elements, all of the layer-related functions are greyed out.

I tried to save as .psd - same results

I open a .jpg file, and all layer-related functions are visible.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
John

What kind of "TIFF file?'

Is it possible that your scanner is set up to produce a one-bit (black-and-white only, sometimes called a "bitmapped") file?

Yes, it was set for bit-mapped - does this prevent editing in Adobe?

Can I convert it to "editable" format??

You have two choices ...

(1) Rescan, with the scanner set to produce a 'Grayscale' image (best), or

(2) in PhotoShop, 'Image/Mode' and click on 'Grayscale.'

john,

Quoting, "it was set for bit-mapped - does this prevent editing in Adobe?"

Answer Yes, it prevents you from editing, you can not convert.

John, you will need to rescan as, RSD99 indicates.
