Cant read pdf pages

I have downloaded some web page info that turn out to be .pdf files. When I double click on it Photoshop starts up and displays it with a chequered background and an unreadable image.
Without becoming a graphics wiz what do I do to get at the information I have downloaded?

Install Acrobat Reader fro Adobe ands associate the files with that instead of PS.

Take you pick :-) (probably Adobe Acrobat with pics?)
