How do I make a picture look like a "standing" paper?

I'm doing the cover art for a record and now I wan't to make a nice presentation of how it will look when it's done.

How do I make the artword (a two-paged PDF) look like it's made of paper and standing up unfolded? I want it too look like it's a photo taken of the booklet standing unfolded on the table. I've tried to use skew/perspective and so on, but it's hard to get the angles right. And more inportant, how do I make it look like it's made of paper? Maybe slightly wavy, but not much.

All this could be done with a 3D-app, but I don't have one and it must could be done pretty easy with Photoshop?

I see these kind of things all the time on the internet, pictures looking like paper folders and they're not photos, the're made digitally. But how?

A tutorial would be nice...

thanks,

You mean, something like this?:

I'm certain Photoshop can do similar, but I used Anim8or http://anim8or.com (free) for 3D still or animations. It's so easy, even Hecate could probably master it :-)

More like this: http://houseind.com/house.php?kit=FLYER-FO (but in my example it's going to be two pages and thinner paper).

the example you showed looks very plastic..

Plastic? Okay :-)

How's this?:

What you're looking to do can be done in Photoshop, GIMP and even Paint Shop Pro.

Or, if you wish to make it look even more realistic, use a 3D application. Just map your image as material to an object, then manipulate the object any way you wish.

yes! that's what I'm looking for... but maybe not as rugged in the edges. I guess the perspective bit isn't very hard, but to give the picture a paper texture, how do I do that? Add some noise maybe. And then rough up the edges a little bit.

I'll give it some try's

I have to admit I used a cheap (costwise) draw program called Serif Draw 7 - took 10 minutes!! As for the edges SD7 has a roughen tool, I probably overdid it a little!!
I could probably eventually do it in PS, but I would think it would take me a long time - I use PS for photo manipulation mainly - I expect there are others who will be able to do it far more easily than I - (not sure where they are though - maybe the lunatic posts we have had recently have driven them away??)

ok, this is what I came up with:

guess it's ok... but it still look very unatural beacause everything is so damn straight.

I probably have to work more on the shadows... any other tips on how to make it look more photo realistic?

dt, I did a quick one on PSCS as well. It still needs some tweaking but I think it could be done. I used rectangular shaped for the pages so that I could bend the pages a little. I filled the rectangles with a light grey to set them apart from the white background and stroked the edges with a thin black line. The spine was just drawn with the line tool in a slightly darker gray. I just through in the words at the last minute. They still need to be bent to match the paper bend. You could probably do a lot better than this. http://genji.image.pbase.com/u42/wnor/upload/27593413.pagest andingup.jpg

Try to add a slight gradient.

If you are talking to me, I said it was a quickie and would need to have changes made.

Ok, did this in 1 hour: http://s95005072.onlinehome.us/misc/wc.jpg

Since you added a cast shadow, why isn't the left image brighter than the right?

PSD (didn't even try to organize the layers):

You can draw it - something like this?
http://wind.winona.edu/~stafford/x.html (but do a better job with the type :))

A simple way for starters: Create each part on a separate layer and use dit -> Transform -> Perspective on each. You should also stretch each to fix the depth.

Whenever you do this kind of job, the more "real" information you can start with, the better the results look.

I recently did something like this by folding a tabloid-sized sheet of paper, standing it up on a table edge, then photographing it with a digital camera. I then rasterized each page of the PDF, placed it in Photoshop, and used Free Transform to map each page onto the photograph of the sheet of paper.

You can make the image look printed on the paper by playing with the opacity of the PDF layer, using different blending modes, deleting the white parts of the PDF so that the paper shows through, or some combination of all the above, depending on how the PDF looks. By mapping the PDF onto a real folded sheet of paper, you're guaranteed to get the perspective right.

Painter is great for paper texture, but if you don't have it, try this in PS: white Layer, Filter>Render>Fibers - immediately Edit>Fade Fibers, Filter>Noise>Add Noise (experiment with amount or Edit>Fade Noise immediately), Filter>Brushstrokes>Crosshatch - immediately Fade Crosshatch.

Looks pretty good. I think that having the spine "away" from the viewer would help, and you are correct about the shadows. Right now, it appears to be a large irregular polygon hovering above the background. Define, in your mind, the shape and distance of the background, i.e. is it a photographer's "sweep" or "seamless" background? If so, the shadow would only fall on the base area of the background, not on the rear portion. Otherwise, I think you have the idea and got the "paper" or silk on cardboard look.
