there don’t seem to be broken fonts
How did you establish this?
Photoshop is notorious for stumbling over imperfect fonts which otherwise cause no problems.
One solution is to move out all fonts except those needed by the OS and CS and move them back a few at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
Hi John,
thx for the answer. I looked into the fonts folder and sometimes broken fonts appeared as zero byte files.
Besides of that I deletetd all currently installed fonts and reinstalled only the fonts from a clean Windows installation. On the first try PS worked, but starting it a second time, it crashed again using text 🙁

Does it do this regardless of which font you use for the text?
There has to be a process of elimination to find the cause.
I presume you reset the Type tool from the Character palette already.
By the way, you either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
It doesn’t matter which font I use 🙁
No, how do I reset the Type Tool?
And the confirmation showed up
Peter
Ah, thanks, I did it, but is this font specific and not general for all fonts?
But it crashed again. In the meantime I used Font Expert 2007 to identify font problems. It found several name conflicts, which I repaired. No effect, crash, boom, bang 😉

ps: BTW, no fontproblem with PS CS2 on the same machine.
Well no more ideas from here.
All I can say is Himmiherrgottkruzifixalleluia.
"All I can say is Himmiherrgottkruzifixhalleluia" 🙂 🙂
Me too 😉
Thank you for your help!
Peter
same thing happens on my 3 computers….g4 laptop and 2 g5 towers. went back to cs2
Did anyone solve this issue? I have the same problem. Not only that but my photoshop crashes when opening some older PSD files.
argh….now my CS2 will not open any files.
i’m caught in a CS3 22.
😉
seriously though, if anyone can give some help it would be appreciated!
I’m having the exact same problem, though with my CS2 rather than CS3. Closing without warning every time I try to use the type tool. It starts typing fine, but just decides to stop midway through and close. Only just started doing it a few days ago. Tried repairing the install with no luck, tried uninstalling and reinstalling entirely, with no luck as well. Getting very close to trying a complete system reformat if I can’t figure out how to get it to work properly :/ Any help at all, or any ideas to try, would be extremely appreciated.
dd you should post in the mac forum.
try resetting prefrences. description is in the faq. if that doesn’t work, start hunting for a dodgy font. there’s also something in the faq for isolating bad fonts.
I still stuck in this problem. As I wrote in the initial post, I have a clean Windows XPpro installation (with all updates) and only the standard fonts.
The first (!) program I installed was Photoshop from Creative Suite 3 premium. But this PS crashes using text tool :-(.
Then I installed PS CS2, which works fine and stable 😕
Any further help would be very appreciated.
Thanks and greetings
Peter
did you reset the preferences?
Yes, as written in the startpost, I did. But it crashed even the first start after installation, there couldn’t be any faulty preferences 😉
Adobe is killing my nerves…
