I often need to get the Info data for an area larger than 5 pixels. The largest the sampler tool does if a 5×5 area. Sometimes I’d like sample an area that’s 50×50. I can do this by selecting an area of the appropriate size and the using Blur > Average. Then sampling somewhere in the area and writing down the results. Gee.

I’d like to do it as easy as the Sampler tool and the Info pallet. Ideally the sampler tool would let you set the size as large as you want and then showing you the sample area as you choose where you want to sample.

Is there a way to do something like this?

In version CS3 you can set the sampler to read 13×13, but not 50×50.

You could probably write a script that would perform the average blur, measure the RGB numbers, back out the blur, then pop up a dialog.

One other possibility would be to make a selection, then look at the mean on the histogram panel, for Red, Green, and Blue.

I figure 13 will be enough, I was just pushing the envelope. 🙂

So, now I have to consider ponying up for CS3

Thanks for the reply

"Average" has always served me well for grabbing a larger sample than the eyedropper could handle.

Chris Cox included it with a set of Mac-Only filters <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.2ccd3ccf/40> he released in 1995. I’ve been using it since 1997, even though it only worked in the Classic environment after Mac OS X was released.

If you are on a newsreader maybe you can’t see the image.

Nope, just a generic link to the imageshack home page.

FWIW, I see J.J.’s image.

Perhaps you have it blocked? I remember having that problem awhile back…I AdBlocked the entire ImageShack domain, somehow. Manually fixed it, and it’s back to normal now.

The eyedropper options in CS3 are:

3×3
5×5
11×11
31×31
51×51
101×101

Honest to Chrysler, I just can’t fathom a preference for using a newsreader here.

But that’s an argument best left for mean drunk, full moon Mondays!

Funny, I can’t fathom a preference for the web interface.

I guess I recalled incorrectly when I said 13×13. CS3 has just what the OP wanted.

As tears go bye, it will be possible
to sample NxN pixels.
For instance 17×17.
Yes, THEN I’ll upgrade.

Joking apart – it’s so ridiculous
to consider this degree of freedom
as a remarkable progress.

Funny, I can’t fathom a preference for the web interface.

The fact you just had to post twice instead of edit is a pretty good reason.

I rest my case 😉
