I have a bunch of photos I want to add to my video and want to make sure that I have the right aspect ratio in Photoshop to get good video images in my NLE.

I’m using CS2 and in the Video preset for NTSC DV it shows an aspect ratio of 720×480.

On the other hand, a very knowledgeable friend of mine told be the correct setting would be:

655×480

Because a DV pixel is .9091:1. So for square pixels to fit (they are ~10% wider), you have to use fewer of them. You want enough square pixels to create a 720 DV pixel wide screen. So, 720 x .9091 = 655.

Can anyone tell me which method is best and why?

Thanks.

You use 720 x 480 pixels and set the pixel aspect ratio to 0.9 (there’s even a preset for it in the new document dialog box)
