converting a smart object into a shape layer

is there a way to convert a smart object into a shape layer?

Select the layers pixels and convert to a path then add a fill?

A tip, is to hold down the alt button when clicking 'make workpath from selection' in the Paths Panel - this will bring up the tolerances dialogue.

thnkx , BTW...is there a way to paste illustrator pathes in photoshop while preserving the x and y position?
