I’ve noticed that once you manually name a text layer there’s no obvious way to reset it so that auto-naming is restored, i.e. the layer name matches the actual text used.

Is there any way to do reset this?

The easiest thing is to select and copy the text in the image, double click the layer name and paste it in.

Right, but that still won’t restore its auto-naming function. If you make another change to the text the layer name won’t reflect it.

Not sure there is an easy way. Copy the text, make a Snapshot, go Back in History, Duplicate that (old) layer to its own file, Paste the new text which will be updated in the name, click the Snapshot in the original doc and drag the old/new text layer into that doc, and work from there? Kind of a pain.

RIC: Just to let you know, this is the user-to-user forum, and to techs do not normally live here (although a few drop in from time to time). To actually reach those people you have to contact Adobe Support.

Another thought: There might be some kind of Scripting solution to this problem. Try on the Photoshop Scripting Forum: <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?13@@.3bbf2765>
