Using the Extract Filter

I am unable to access the extract filter. Extract and several other filters (artistic, stylize, liquify, pattern maker, filters gallery etc) are dimmed on the filters menu. I have tried everything I can think of and can't figure out how to access them!! Perhaps there was a problem with installation? Thanks for your advice.

Go to Image’Mode’ …and tell us what format your image is in.

16bits/channel will prevent access to the Extract functions. Change it to 8 bits/channel.
