Background: Well I had CS2 and that worked fine, no problems with the text tool or any others...until I upgraded
Problem: Now I have upgraded to CS3 the text tool wont work for me. I drag the text box over the desired area, type the text in and it doesn't show up, but the layer is still labeled what I entered in the box.
Tried Solutions:
-I have tried to change the colour of the text and change the background colour I am writing on.
-I have tried using multiple texts, stock ones and ones which I have previously downloaded, same problem occurs.
-I have tried making a new document and doing the above in that.
-I have tried to use CS2 again but now the problem happens there too.
-I have tried reinstalling CS3 and i have now uninstalled CS2 altogether.
Two unusual occurences:
-I opened a previous photoshop document from CS2 and the text tool worked perfectly in that document but when I went back to a new CS3 document it didn't work again. (Note - this was an old CS2 document that this worked in, not on the CS2 program)
-Also now when i try to uninstall CS3 it wont let me, I guess this means it was not installed correctly which may be a contributer to the problem, but other tools work fine, to my knowledge.
I have tried to be as precise as possible but it sort of turned into a rant :) but I hope someone can simply solve my problem as I have been trying to figure it for a few days. Please and Thank you to all who help

Have you tried resetting the text tool?
#2
No I hadn't but I have now and it hasn't helped. Anymore ideas? Thank you still...
#3
you're not in indexed color mode are you? (image> mode).
anyway, if that's not it, reset your preferences per the faq.
#4
Nope in RGB. will look at the faq now
#5
What is the resolution of the file? Check that. If it's absurdly small, like 1 ppi, this can happen.
#6
damn. sorry i missed that ed. hope he checks here first.
#7
No not the res either, checked in faq and nothing in there...
#8
drag the text box over the desired area, type the text in and it doesn't show up
Does it work correctly if you just click and type?
#9
nothing in there...
about resetting preferences? it's like the 2nd or third one from the top.
#10
"Does it work correctly if you just click and type?"
No that doesnt work either
And when I said nothing there I looked again and reset them. Doesnt help :( Anymore ideas? Thanks for your help so far.

This could be a rough one. Are all your fonts commercial ones, or do you have some from the Internet (freebies). The latter often cause problems with PS, and removing them can solve some problems.
You might try cleaning out all the odd fonts you have, and try with just the basic windows and adobe ones.
#12
Grasping at straws here:
Search for instances of AdobeFnt*.lst (where * is a number) and delete them. They will be rebuilt as required.

"You might try cleaning out all the odd fonts you have, and try with just the basic windows and adobe ones."
I don't know which ones I downloaded so I don't know which ones to delete, plus it's only documents I create now that don't work, but old documents seem to work.
I searched what you said, John, and replaced * with a 1 and nothing came up. What numbers should I try?
#14
no, don't replace the * in the search. search for AdobeFnt*.lst
that'll bring up ALL occurances of adobe font list. he meant that when the files return there may be 5 or more with a number where the * is.
#15
Oh right, ok, but could someone tell me what these are before I delete them?
#16
just lists of fonts ps thinks are installed. they're rebuilt if they're gone. occasionally then can get corrupted. no worries.
#17
Did that and it didn't help. AnyMORE ideas? Thank you for persevering top.
#18
Type out your text in another document and drag the layer over. What happens?
#19
Yeah thats how I've done it for now but I doesn't work that well.
#20
Hi Paul
What font size have you selected? I notice that if the font size is too big to display in the text area then you do not see anything at all.
Regards, Nigel
#21
Tried smallest font to largest font and tried changing the size of the text box lots too...Doesn't help
#22
When to say it "doesn't work that well", what exactly do you mean? Does the text display at a reasonable size?
Maybe the document itself is corrupted.
#23
No I mean it's annoying switching it from documents, its still possible just unconvenient. Its not the document because I can create new ones and it doesnt work on them
#24
I am just wondering if you really did successfully delete your original preferences.
Did you use the "Hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys while starting Photoshop" method and did you get a confirm dialog? You have to be quick!
You could try deleting everything in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings it will rebuild when you start Photoshop.
#25
You could also try the following:
Make a new document in RGB/8 bit, colour white.
Select the normal horizontal type tool and set the text colour in the Options Bar to black.
Click in the image area and type.
If nothing appears, use the Scrubby Sliders in the Character Palette to vary the values of font size, leading, kerning, tracking and baseline shift across their full range of values.
Still nothing?

Woo! Its working now! I deleted my preferences file the way you said, loaded it up and did it the Alt Ctrl Delete way, loaded the file you said and it worked! I tried a file I had previously used and it didn't work in that...it must have been something to do with the settings in the file, but its working now, thank you!
#27
I also wanted to say thanks to everyone else who helped, very helpful everyone!
#28
Woo Hoo!
Perseverance pays off!
Glad you're back in business Paul :)
