here’s the thing. it used to work just fine saving (saving as) a created psd file with transparent background to a PNG file and then placing this in InDesign CS3. either through bridge or the place command.

since a few days I get an "invalid PNG file" when importing it in InDesign. the culprit seems to be PS thou. I tried a couple of things (like hiding layers, merging everything before saving as, etc.), it wont work. most of the times that is. sometimes the same file just works after a couple of save as runs. but I dont have time for trial and error.

besides, the "save for web" thingy works with the same files and those can be imported into InDesign every time. I gathered thou, those are converted to 72dpi files, right? that would be usesless for printing InDesign projects.

how to I make PS save as PNG files that are proper again?

InDesign will load the PSD file with the transparency. I see no reason to save as PNG file first.

I don’t even have to think hard and see tons of reasons.

in my and this case, imagine a psd file with a lot of fx and layers, e.g. the cover label for a cd-rom that has multiple releases and therefor the cover labels vary slightly in shades and numbering (serial plus cd 01, cd 02…..).

I save those layers by making the right combinations visible and saving them as a png.

would that be a reason?

You could just save as a psd instead. Or layered tiff. But as for the issue of your files only recently being corrupted, that could be a case of bad hardware, such as bad ram or hard disk failures.

nah, found the problem. that is, after I wiped my system drive clean, reinstalled vista (ever done that? any idea how long vista takes to install?), reinstalled cs3 and nothing else.

tested, still the same issue. replaced all ram, graphic card, another drive. still the same.

then it hit me. I opened up photoshop, converted the png’s in question to adobe generic color profile, saved them again as png and voilà, it works just fine.

the friggin ps needs a proper png export filter (or id3 a proper import filter for pngs). saving a png from within photoshop while the psd file has a custom color profile embedded seems to result in invalid png files as far as indesign is concerned.

maybe i’m just doing this wrong. but if not, why the heck did i pay so much for this package?
