I am on a MacBook Pro using 10.4. 11. I have tried several time to install this new update (yes I’m a registered user) either through Photoshop Help/Update or through the direct links to Adobe and they keep failing to install.
Any suggestions?

What error message do you get when it fails?

Linns,

How much free hard drive space do you have? Did you try any system maintenance? (FWIW, I ran the combined update for Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS4 today on my G5 tower running 10.4.11) without a hitch.)

Chris, There wasn’t an error message. It simply said : Failed to Install. When you close the screen another screen says something like the updating process is complete then closes.
I’ve tried redoing it about half a dozen times from Photoshop and a few times directly from Adobe and they all say the same thing.

I have plenty of hard drive space and I checked permissions and that was fine. The only thing I can think of was that my Photo Downloadier was on when the installation was in progress.

Is there anything I can do to get this to work?

Hmm, there should be some sort of error message saying WHY it failed (even if the message isn’t useful to most people – but we’re working on that).

Try doing it through Bridge/Help menu/Updates.

That worked for me.

You never moved Photoshop from the default installation location or renamed any of its folders did you?

Hi Ann,

I haven’t moved or renamed the program. I just open it from the dock as usual to use it. I did try it through Bridge last night and it says the same thing.

Chris, I ran Tech Tool pro 5 on my computer last night and everything seems fine. I am still not able to install. I looked carefully to see what it says and it reads:
Done With Error
Photoshop 11.0.1 – Failed to install.

It does not give any error number.

Basically I see it downloading, it scans the update, then tells me to shut Photoshop and run the installation again, it appears to do this again and finishes up with the message that it ‘Failed to install’.

Downloading directly from Adobe basically does the same thing, though my Photoshop program is already off. It delivers a folder which I open and double click and the rest does the same as above.

I’d like to be able to fix this so your suggestions are most welcome.

Hi Linns

It seems that your Photoshop app is still running in the background and has not quit properly , can you close , restart and then try to patch again.

In case you see the failure again , please send the logs from following location

aum logs – Volume/User/"User Name"/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Updater 6/aum.log

Installer log – volume/Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers/Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0 log.gz

Should I be posting the logs here? They are very long.

You did it all wrong in the first place. The installer also forgot to tell you to quit the bridge and safari or other browsers.

Trash the photoshop settings folder in your users preferences, but first quit Photoshop.

The download the update from any adobe in the suites application. Then quit all applications you don’t need an application running when you are updating another application just not necessary.

Then after all applications are closed run the updater you do not have to quit the updater that and the finder you can leave alone.

you will probably be alright now.

Otherwise try it from a different user account.

Well you clearly started all wrong you should keep in mind for future installs there is really no reason to run other applications when you run a n updater.

The other things you should be aware of are things like haxies and third party plug ins.

I suspect you have something installed that is conflicting or perhaps a faulty connection somewhere.

Interestingly, with this update (when I deliberately used the Help window/ Update from Bridge so that I could test the CS4 Updater), the Updater gave no instructions to quit from other Applications (including the web Browser) — although I had of course already quit from both InDesign and Photoshop anyway.

I have a similar problem. The updates wont work neither the automatic via Adobe Updater nor the ones I dl from Adobes site. I use Mac, 10.5.6, and the Adobe Creative Suite, Design Premium (education edition), all paid for. The strange thing is that the updater doesn’t give any reason why it can’t update. It just says it couldn’t complete. And when I dl the updates from Adobe and start them up, there isn’t any message at all, it just finishes real quick and hasn’t done anything.

My Adobe apps are in Applications folder, in a folder called "Adobe CS4". Their folders have the correct names. The only odd thiing is that I run a Swedish system but the apps are the english version. Could that in any way prevent the updates???

I just tried to restart my mac, did the latest apple updates and run Disk Utility (repaired (don’t know what it’s called in english)…) (not the drive, the other thing) sorry). So I know my system is fresh, in working order and no other apps were running, still the Adobe updates would work.

Any help and suggestions much appreciated!!!

THAT is the problem:

They should NOT be in a folder called "Adobe CS4" — each application should be sitting separately in the Applications folder.

Well, Linns, it looks like the update installer is giving you an error because it can’t find the volume "Adobe Photoshop CS4" which is probably your original installation disc (or the DMG if you downloaded the software).

Try putting in your install disc (or double-click on the DMG if you downloaded), close any windows that pop up, then run the 11.0.1 installer (either with Help > Updates or the standalone installer).

I’m using Norton AntiVirus v11.x — but no issues. But, it does bring up another point. As antivirus software has been known to interfere with installation of some software, it should be disabled temporarily during the installation process.

===

I noticed a couple of Windows folks here. I recommend that you post the problem in the Photoshop Windows forum for some assistance.

===

Also, as Ann says, Adobe applications must be kept in their default installation location inside the Applications folder for them to work or be updated properly. This means without placing them inside other folders and without renaming or moving anything.

If you need to have a different organization for your apps, they can be placed in the Dock or aliases can be created and placed in a folder and location of your choosing.

The Adobe updater, also known as Adobe Updater Manager (AUM) and/or Adobe auto updater, has been broken in one way or another for years and years. I have’nt used in I don’t know how many years.

Another problem is that, once you used it and it failed, you’ll have trouble even with the manual updaters.

Please note that some members of the Photoshop team, including the Principal Photoshop Program Manager, have voiced more than frustration with the folks responsible for the updaters, a group not within Photoshop.

My advice is to go the manual route, as well as to Repair Permissions before and after the installation.

Fred M Stevens,

No, the installer can’t find the application because she hid it in a subfolder. On the Mac, and beginning with CS3, obviously including CS4, you HAVE TO respect the default installation location meticulously and scrupulously. Always.

You cannot create subfolders, nor can you move the application icon or the Photoshop application folder, ever.

Your site is down, Fred, so I can’t check, but from some of your answers it sounds like you’re a Windoze man. 😉

Thanks for the tips!

I did not run any anti-virus software, so that couldn’t be the problem.

On the other hand – my folder organisation MAY be, but…: Before installing I read very carefully the documentation that follows the suite, here are some quotes:
"On Mac, you cannot install to the root drive." "Although you can choose to install an edition of Creative Suite 4 on a secondary partition, the installer still requires up to 6GB of free space available on the primary partition to complete the installation."
i.e. There was nothing in that text that stated exactly where the apps should be installed, or that it would be crucial to keep them where Adobe put them. And the second quote even implies that I can choose another drive/partition, way out of applications folder…

(I like to be able to sort my apps in my folder, via subfolders. Otherwise the list gets to long and crowded.)

Well, I’ll try to move for instance my Photoshop folder back to Applications and see what happens.

Use aliases, that is precisely what they are for.

Edit after trying: I moved the PS-folder,

That does you no good whatsoever, as you’ve discovered.

Do I really have to reinstall my Creative Suite??

Yes. You may have to use the Adobe Uninstaller first.

Why Adobe gives the user a choice of install location is simply incomprehensible. Even when initially installing CS4, you are presented with a choice to change the location of the installation and that’s unconscionable.

It was downright stupid of Adobe to offer a choice, especially when Adobe’s own installers, uninstallers, updaters and filters cannot find the application if you choose a different install location.

We are not Adobe. I am not here to explain why Adobe does anything, nor to apologize for Adobe.

The one thing I can tell you is that you will have problems, and the problems will only increase down the road.

Follow-up on #24:

From reports in the Windows Forum, it seems that if you have run certain AV programs at all since you installed CS4, you will have to UNinstall CS4 and then RE-install it from the original DVD before you will be able to update to 11.0.1.

Apparently some AV software has moved vital Adobe files from where they were installed by default.

Ramon -Its not that Adobe doesnt provides option to install at a custom location. But once it is installed , its safe to let it remain at that location only.
If you keep on changing application folder location after install then it goes under cycle of repair sessions.

Unicorn – you can Uninstall just Photoshop uninstaller using Adobe Uninstaller and then reinstall Photoshop at the original location where you installed Creative Suite.Close any running AV , other Adobe apps and then try running updates.Hope it will work for you.

Its not that Adobe doesn’t provides option to install at a custom location. But once it is installed, it’s safe to let it remain at that location only.

And I will assume that under this cirumstance, any later updaters will properly find it. This is very interesting!

Ramon -Its not that Adobe doesnt provides option to install at a custom location.

Well, I said the exact opposite, Anshum. To me, it’s just unconscionable for Adobe to provide that option. The option shouldn’t be available at all. Experience shows us that installing in a different location always causes problems eventually. Updaters and plug-in installers often fail to find the application in a non-standard location. If such a location is a user-created subfolder, then change often for always.
