Corrupt Layer mask

I'm having an intermittent problem when using the eraser tool on a layer mask. The mask becomes corrupt and fills with junk as seen in this screenshot - < http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1042/529232834_b36c9b8cf5_o.j pg> I have tried quiting and trashing preferences, which doesn't work. I thought it might just be a screen redraw problem at first but it is actually saved in all masks in the PSD file. What's more frustrating is that it happens only after i have opened a couple of files and worked on them successfully. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Dylan.

Hi Dylan,
Why do you edit the layer mask in "Quick Mask" mode? Try to do the same in "Standard" editing mode. Just a suggestion though...

why are you using the eraser tool on a layer mask? Just paint with black or white on the mask making sure you have selected the layer mask thumbnail in the layer's palette

The problem I have described above happens when using any brush, including the eraser, sorry I should of made that clear. Regardless, has anybody seen the problem as shown in the screenshot? Or does anybody have any suggestions at troubleshooting? I am using PS CS2 version 9.0.2 on win xp. I have tried trashing the application data folder. I'm at a loss as to what to do next! Any help warmly welcomed!

Have you tried resetting the preferences?

(see the FAQ for how)

@Cybernetic Nomad - Yes (See above)
The same thing happened straight after trashing preferences, and relaunching PS. But now it seems to be behaving itself, weird.

Sorry--missed it somehow

looks like a hardware problem (if it's saved and reloaded and not just on the screen).

If you zoom in and they go away, it's probably the video card.

If you zoom in and out and they change, it's probably bad RAM.

If the image looks fine, you save it, then reload it and it's corrupted - then it's probably the hard disk.

my guess is it's a combination of things going wonky, or just something common like the power supply or cpu or mobo.

Hi dave, yeah it's beginning to look like a hardware problem. Adobe tech support are looking into it. Thanks for the help.
