Have CS2, Windows XP, for more than a year. Four days ago I suddenly lost some of my tools (I swear I did not leave the tailgate of my truck down). Tools not working are clone, brush, eraser, smudge and dodge/burn. What are working are bucket, type. I tried reloading PS over itself but got an error message.

Had IT guy in today to check out the computer, and he could find no problems.

Thank you.

If you have a Wacom or similar tablet, move the pen farther away from it.

"Suddenly…" is a major clue to Trash/Reset Preferences as per the FAQs.

Michael:
You were so right. I seldom use the tablet, and a tech had recently fixed a noisy fan in my computer and had moved it. It sits behind my paper holder and so I cannot normally see it.

Thank you very much for such a simple fix.

You’re welcome, Dorinda. The symptoms of a pen on or near tablet are pretty easy to recognize once you know what they are. It’s such a nearly guaranteed fix that a forum poster can act like he or she has a camera on your desktop and say something like, "I see that the pen is too close to the tablet…."
