Do a Web search for "photoshop displacement map tutorial".

Hey,
Ive been trying the displacement tools for this and gettin somewhere....
Ive added the displacement so the text etc is broken up and looks like the wood, however it still looks like its been super-impossed onto the wood rather than actually getting cut out of the tree.
see the link for what i have done so far, any tips would be great!!

You haven't said which version of Photoshop you're using, but if your version supports it, add a little curved warp collectively to both parts of the logo so it looks like its following the curvature of the tree trunk.
And you may want to back off on the opacity settings for your Bevel/Emboss shadow and highlighting.
Looks pretty good otherwise, even if it's a little hard to read.

Im using CS,
thanks for this i will have aanother look at it. I was trying to get it as if they had been cut into the wood (light wood when cut) rather than it looking burnt into the tree.
I understand what your saying with the curving, valued point that cheers.
thanks again for your help :)

"I was trying to get it as if they had been cut into the wood (light wood when cut) rather than it looking burnt into the tree."
Experiment with the shadow & highlight colors plus the blending modes, for Bevel/Emboss.
