Can't Change Mask Color

PS Ver 7. Win XP.

Hi,
I can't get the mask color to change. I am following the below directions I found at adobe.com but it's not working. Can anybody advise? (Directions are for CS3 and I have V7.)

< http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/10.0/help.html?con tent=WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-785e.html>

which read as follows:

Change the layer mask rubylith color or opacity
Do one of the following:
Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) the layer mask thumbnail to select the layer mask channel; then double-click the layer mask thumbnail.

Double-click the layer mask channel in the Channels palette.

To choose a new mask color, in the Layer Mask Display Options dialog box, click the color swatch and choose a new color.
To change the opacity, enter a value between 0% and 100%. Both the color and opacity settings affect only the appearance of the mask and have no effect on how underlying areas are protected. For example, you may want to change these settings to make the mask more easily visible against the colors in the image.

Click OK.

First off...notice that the LiveDoc support pages you're looking at are for PS CS3. There may be differences between PS CS3 and PS 7...or there may not be.

Have you tried looking at the HTML files or the PDF User manual for your version...which should be located on your hard drive?

What does it do when you follow the instructions? Works fine for me in CS and, as I recall in every version from 4 through 7.

You understand the ACTUAL color of the mask will always be black & white? Masks or channels are grayscale images. They do not have color. What they are talking about is the visible representation of the mask when seen against other layers/images?

Hi,
I got it to work by using "Quick Mask" which is what the Help instructions said to do. I was using the Mask in the Layers Box before and that one wouldn't change colors.

Thanks,
TBk
