The crash report data means nothing to me, but let me ask, at what point does it crash?
In other words, is it scanning Fonts for instance? That can be a common source of trouble. Unfortunately the "cure" is to remove (or disable) all the fonts and add them one by one, restarting Photoshop each time until you get the crash again. That will tell you which file is corrupt.
I hope someone else has a better answer.
Hi Ed,
It’s hard to tell the exact point because it happens rather quickly, but I’d say it’s when it’s scanning Plug-Ins.
I can’t even open CS4 without Photoshop crashing. It asks me if I want to enter a serial number or use it on a trial basis and before I can choose, it crashes.
Hi Wade,
I’m so confused- that worked (so THANK YOU for saving my project). But why did that work?
I’d like to keep all of my documents with my original OSX account so I don’t have to keep switching back and forth, don’t have to install software like iTunes twice, resync my iPhone, etc. Is there a way to fix my original account?
Also, iTunes will not open now on my original account. Very frustrated!
there is something corrupt in the old user. this rules out a problem with the system and the actual application software.
First thing I would try is trash the prefs see if that will get you back working in your old account. If that does not work next thing I would do is an Archive and install of the OS. This will give you a fresh OS and user account but keep your settings(internet and mail stuff)
But trash your prefs first.
You can also trouble shoot your preferences folder if you wish. This has an advantage as it may point to the conflict or point of corruption.
Do you know how to half your preferences when trouble shooting?
Hi Wade,
I do not know how to troubleshoot my preferences folder. I tried deleting everything in my user/Library/Preferences/ folder as well as my MacintoshHD/Library/Preferences folder, but it did no good- both Photoshop installations (and iTunes are still crashing).
Thanks
Kevin,
I do not know how to troubleshoot my preferences folder. I tried deleting everything in my user/Library/Preferences/ folder as well as my MacintoshHD/Library/Preferences folder…
STOP! If you do not know what you’re doing, don’t do it. You’re liable to make things far worse by trashing stuff that should not be trashed!
Neil
I see what you mean and appreciate the advice…all of my applications are acting like they were just installed. I was able to fix the CS3 problem, however, so I don’t have to keep switching between accounts. Thanks to everyone who responded.
You’ll get the hang of it Kevin.
Glad everything is working.
Neil
If kevin trashed everything in his preferences folder that would do little harm if any and at the most he would have to do is reenter a seri number and reconfigure his panel layouts.
I suspected that after he did what he did he may have restarted his computer and that might have reset the finders preferences or perhaps he also tossed a bad profile though from the crash report it does look like the com.adobe.Photoshop.plist might have gotten corrupt.
Kevin
You should now go to the Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and launch the disk utility and repair the permissions on your start up disk. Your Hard Drive.
It may not need repair but just in case.
Wade,
If kevin trashed everything in his preferences folder that would do little harm if any and at the most he would have to do is reenter a seri number and reconfigure his panel layouts.
But it’s taking a shotgun approach when a fly swatter would do. Maybe I was a bit dramatic with my "STOP!" But why should Kevin have to waste time reconfiguring apps and utilities, etc. that were not giving him a problem in the first place?
Neil
They may actually have ben given him the problem how ever he should have waited for instructions on how to trouble shoot. which in the end would save time. It has never been determined where the problem resides and now of course one would be hard press to located it. So if it shows up again it would be kind of expected and then he will have a chance to properly trouble shoot the Preferences folder.
The reason you would do that is perhaps determine what the underlying problem is and possibly find a permanent solution.
I just solved my CS2 crashing problem by clearing out the Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/ **bad twain
Try removing all the twains. You can put them back in if that doesn’t solve it.
Good luck.
Coyote
Wade was wise to know this problem could happen again. It has. Very very very very frustrating. Let me explain what has happened:
I just reopened an After Effects file that I was using for my client when Photoshop started to give me problems. It has a .psd in its project folder which I tried to open in Photoshop while After Effects was running. It crashed.
I’ve tried dragging my Preferences to the Desktop (from my User>Library folder and my Macintosh HD>Library folder) and relaunching, but it still crashed. I can’t open iTunes any more either. AAAAGGGHHH!!!!
BUT, switch to another account, and Photoshop is working again. What is going on?!
Some possible helpful measures:
Does the .psd which caused the crash contain fonts? if so which ones because they could be a problem.
Plug-ins: Leave the Plug-ins and Presets folders in their default positions but remove any third-party plug-ins and the TWAIN plug-in.
Version Cue: Make sure that VC is disabled in both the Photoshop and Bridge Prefs..
Do a Search for "Adobefnt" and delete ALL incidences and flavours of Adobefnt
.lst files except for AdobeFnt.db.
Hi,
I appreciate the help. I followed all of your suggestions, but unfortunately, nothing worked.
I don’t think the problem is with a font. I deleted all of the Adobefnt files (didn’t see an AdobeFnt.db file in my search). I went into Font Book and disabled all User fonts, then tried relaunching Photoshop, but it still crashes.
In Bridge’s Preferences, Version Cue is disabled. I remember a long while ago, Photoshop wasn’t working because of an update to Version Cue, so I used an old version of it. I forgot exactly what I did, but Version Cue has never been updated since this happened. Thinking maybe it was VC, I tried to install the latest OSX VC Client- vc_cs3_client_310.dmg, but it resulted in an error. I also installed: asset_services_cs3_310.dmg, but that did nothing.
I’m completely guessing, but could this problem be somewhere in Application Support? Which files does CS3 install for Photoshop in this folder? Can I troubleshoot this folder?
Thanks!
To which folders does CS3 install files for Photoshop?
All over the place including:
Users/Library/caches;
ditto/Prefs.;
ditto/Application Support/Adobe/
ditto/Scripts
as well as similar places in the HD/Library.
If iTunes is also crashing, you may have wider issues including a rancid QuickTime Security update posted by Apple a while ago.
Thank you Ann for your help.
Glad that you fixed it.
Actually, I am VERY wary of using free Haxies from the Internet as they can so often conflict with important major Applications.
Hiya, the developer of Afloat here.
Afloat versions for Mac OS X 10.4 have historically had a number of problems that have been fixed by Afloat 2.0 and the PlugSuit injector (think APE made by me). Afloat 2.0 is 10.5-only. I do not support 10.4-capable versions of Afloat anymore.
I also do not recommend using system extenders on mission-critical machines, for exactly the reasons outlined above.
