In the left hand corner in my page i have a small number one as well as a small envelop, when i open a new page it is still there. what is it???

First if you see that you are probably not using Elements. In Photoshop you have some how selected the Slice Tool … maybe by tapping (K) on the keyboard. To get rid of it go to >View > Show and uncheck Slices

I believe you must be running full Photoshop?
This is the Elements forum.

You are seeing the annotation for slices.
You can turn it off in the View menu.
