Open Recent always grayed out

I had Photoshop 7.01 installed on a previous Dell laptop and it worked perfectly. When the screen began to burn out, I purchased a new Dell 1510, re-installed Photoshop 7.0 and updated to 7.01.

It works fine except for one annoying difficulty: the "Open Recent" menu item under File is always grayed out, regardless of how I open an image: Ctrl-O, browser, etc. It never becomes active.

Is this a faulty instllation or what?

check your prefrences. is the recent files count set to 0?

As suggested, I check Preferences. Files were set to 10 but I reduced it to 9, opened a file in Photoshop and checked again. I thought it would take 10 but I guess not as Open Recent is now active.
