Grayscale to Rainbow style infrared conversion how?

When you get a grayscale image from an infrared camera like this one:

How with photoshop would you change it to a rainbow image like this one:

Would you use a special filter or would some manipualation with image adjustments do it?

Image->Mode->RGB color
Image->Adjustments->Gradient Map and choose a gradient.

The simplest would be to use the gradient tool in Photoshop. Just apply a suitable colour gradient, and there you are! --

Where the brightest bits are red and then slightly duller yellow then green then blue being the dullest.

You turn the original image into an 256 colour indexed bitmap and then rewrite the colour lookup table to match your idea of a cute false colour scheme or to bring out the detail you want emphasised. Various false colour tables are popular for different scientific applications.

One minor problem is that a consumer grade digital camera can only image in near IR so there is no way to convert image brightness to temperature in the same way that a thermal imager does.

(I would be taking a grayscale infrared photo with a camera then hoping to colour it in this way).

Unless you have access to a far IR camera with a germanium lens you can't really get the same results. Easy enough to have white foliage on the trees with a near IR filter though.
