I am new to this, and have PS 8.0 on a windows XP box.
I have a picture of a new home that I want to adjust for a flier. I am trying to change the garage door color from the factory white to the body color of the home with out loosing the detail of the door and change the gray sky to blue. There are some leafy trees covering some of the sky. When I use the Image/adjustments/change color tool, the colors always change to gray or a color that may be covered with gray, not the color I selected.
Can you help me?
Thanks!

I would select the door, pick from the color picker the desired new color, and then fill with the ‘color’ option. It might not work but you can adjust things to make it work, I think.

I would like to tune up the lawn, change the garage door color to match the trim color around the garage door without loosing the hardware in the process, and make the sky look a natural blue, maybe with some ( optional) clouds.

Sky=Select>Colour Range and play with the fuzziness to take in the leaves. Filter>Render>Clouds then fill the resulting selection. Would be better "pasting into" the selection a stock sky shot with more cloud behind the tree/leaves to minimise the halos.
The door isn’t as easy as it may seem, white (or nearly white)is a difficult hue to deal with as there is little or no colour variation. I selected the door and just altered the brightness/contrast. Am using a crap laptop, will try again tomorrow.

I would change distortion first using the perspective under Image:Transform:Perspective. To my eyes the top of the house is compressed. After you get a good selection on the white of the garage door, select the color of the trim and fill the door with the color of the trim set at mode:color opacity:30%. Adjust the selection with the levels menu by moving the center triangle to the right without adjusting the other two. I don’t know why this works at 30%, but it seems to me that getting the color into the selection and then darkening with the levels is a good way to start. You might want to experiment with values other than 30.

If I owned the house, I would think about painting the garage door, as you suggest. After you fix the distortion crop so that the middle part of the tree doesn’t stick out. To me, it just looks better. Can they do something with the color of hte driveway : -) It looks like someone stripped the sky out of the pic because there is blue around the upper tree branches. It will look prettier and more natural with some color in the sky. Have fun.

I straightened up the shot with Filter>Distort>Lens Correction. The sky with Select>Color Range and play with the fuzziness slider to get the best from the tree (I would blow it away and replace with a stock sky/tree shot, a lot quicker)
Then Select>Modify>Expand by 1 pixel to remove the holos. With the seletion active copy the sky (+tree?) from another image, then Edit>Paste Into to put the sky into the selection.
Use the move tool to place it where you need to, the Transform tool may also be of use to make it fit better.
The garage door was selected with the polygonal lassoo tool and hit with Image>Adjust>Hue/Sat, click on colorize and play around with with the sliders
H=40
S=12
L=-59

Great. Thanks. It helps to have somewhere to start. I tried removing the sky and tree all together and inserting a blue gradient layer behind the house with some luck, but it looked fake. And I used the paint bucket tool to change the door color with some success. You mentioned something about a stock sky and tree. Where do I find those? That would be a big help.
