I seem to have a random problem when saving .psd files as .jpg. The file doesn't actually save as a .jpg, and when I close my original and try to open it again, I get the error message that the file cannot be opened because it is not a valid photoshop document. The file still has the .psd extension. However, when I look at the file info, it says that the file format is jpeg.
I am using WinXP and Photoshop CS.
Any ideas why this is happening, and, more important at the moment, how to fix a file that has this problem?

What happens if you rename the file so it has a .jpg extension?

Do you have view file extensions of known file types enabled in Windows? If not, enable that feature.

I have the view file extensions enabled. The file is showing as a .psd file. But, the file format has been changed to "image/jpeg" instead of "application/vnd.adobe.ph".

Brandy, in the Save As dialog, sounds like you changed the extension on the File Name line, but did not change the type on the Format line. That causes it to save a PSD file with a JPG extension, which is not good.
An easy way to make it work is, after opening Save As, tap Tab, then J, then Shift-Tab, change the file name if you like, then click Save.

No, the file format was changed, but somehow the extension wasn't. So, it copied over the original file. The file name, including extension is the same, but the format has been changed.
Either way, is there any way to fix this? Or to open the file? This was a photo montage that a student spent hours completing.
