Can't parse Illustrator file

Have saved illustrator file as .ai file extension and when tried to open in Photoshop v5, got message "could not open the document because the parser module cannot parse the file." have reloaded Photoshop but same message. Any suggestions?

What version of Illustrator are you using?

Photoshop 5 won't be able to read Illustrator files from versions of Illustrator that shipped after Photoshop 5.
