Problem with creating text along a path

I have created a path using the pen tool and made sure that path button was selected, not shape. When I then use the text tool to create text along that path, the cursor changes signifying that it found the path however when text is added it does not show up. It does create a new text layer with the text visible there and the color is different from the background so it should be visible. regular text in the same picture file works fine.
I have tried restarting Pshop while holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift to clear any preferences. Any suggestions?

Just to add, it is not file related. It happens even when creating a new file.

Did you check the type size, leading, etc...

You may want to reset that tool.

Yes, font size/ color are correct. How do you reset the type tool?
