I’m looking for a plug-in or a tutorial that will help me make a deckle edge, like on the old drugstore photos from the fifties. I’m working on a series of colorized B&W post-cards from my own shots & I think that edge treatment would be a perfect finish. I use PSE2 on WinXP Home.

I haven’t tried this, but it looks like it can be done on Elements without any modification. It’s a Photoshop tutorial but Modify>Contract and Filter>Ocean Ripple are both in PSE, too.

Beth, I just tried your tip. Works very well. I also tried it with the plain "ripple" filter and that works too, except that one uses a percentage of effect rather than ripple size and ripple magnitude. I have bookmarked the site.

In my 30+ years of doing NY Times crossword puzzles almost every day, I’ve never run across the word ‘deckle’. Thanks for adding that one to my vocabulary!

Thanks Beth, This looks like it will do the trick.

Chuck, I’m always glad to promote the cause of vocabulary building. Now if there was only a way to fit it into conversation …

I haven’t heard the word for many years. The deckle edge is the uncut edge of manufactured paper.

Let’s see, how to use "deckle" in a sentence?

I’ve got to go out and deckle my lawn?

or

The paper I bought wasn’t deckled very well?

or

What the deckle is he up to anyway?

Dick, Too bad it’s not Christmas. We could all sing a Chorus of "Deckle the Halls". Thought for a minute this was going to be some outlandish request for help simulating a patio deck.

"Let’s see, how to use "deckle" in a sentence?"

Pretty easy:

"My neighbour has three dogs: a greyhound, a sheepdog and a deckle" 😉

OK All,

I remeberas a kid when these things came uout. At the time they were "decals". We Canadians pronounced the word witha soft "e" as in "enter". South of the border, decal was pronounced "deecal".
I hope I’m talking about the same stick-on thing here as is in this thread.

I suppose Photoshop sailors would have to swab the deckle.
