I just started on CS3, used to using elements. How do I change my background color to black? I would like to set the default to black and cant find how to change it in a new file or for the default. Any help very much appreciated.

You can toggle through four background modes (two gray and two black) by pressing the F key.

Unless you mean the background colour in the toolbox – in which case press "D" followed by "X".

When making a new doc (command-N) in the dialog (Background Contents) you can choose Background color to be the background. If your BG is black, there you have it.
