Today, photoshop CS2 decided not to work. Any file I try to open, and I’ve tried quite a few different file types/sizes bring up the following error: "Could not complete your request because of a program error". I’m on CS2 Premium (Photoshop 9.0.2) on OSX 10.4.11. I’ve not installed any significant updates in the last few days so I can’t think whats causing it.
I’m aware duplicate fonts could be the issue, so I’ve tried with Suitcase Fusion turned off and the problem persists. How do I ditch Photoshop pref nowadays?

I’m having a similar problem. Photoshop CS2 won’t start. Load all the preferences, fonts, etc. then I get an empty dialog box and it quits. I’ve tried O+C+Shift when starting and it won’t even get to the splash screen.
I’ve tried logging in as a new user and it starts okay, but gives me that warning about how I should upgrade my Mac.
Was working okay last week, this is fairly new.
I’ve also unistalled and reinstalled and trashed the prefs files repeatedly.
Yes, but i can’t open my files because the new user doesn’t have privileges.
Also, when PS opens, the (formerly) empty dialog is a message about compatibility and how much better PS would work on a better system than mine, but it has been working since April just fine.

As thread starter, I’ll update by saying everything was back to normal after a shut-down/restart, but i’ve made a note of Cindy’s shortcut for future reference. I’m out of here…
Scott you don’t make any sence in your references to Classic/OS9 they are the same thing except Classic is emulation inside OSX. If it works in OS9 then it will work in Classic. What version of OSX will make no difference.
the crons are run daily, weekly and Monthly at about 2 or 3 am if you let your computer run all night. other wise you need to run Cocktail or similar to do it.
Okay, I see what you mean. Classic will run in 10.4?
I see you missed post #11. Yes.
It seems that the user is corrupt, as a new user is just fine so there is nothing wrong with the system. Try running the combo 10.2.8 if that does not fix it try bring the prefs from the new user that might do it.
If all else fails then an Archive and Install is called for. this will give you a fresh system and user but keep all apps and settings.
Welp, I got it running. I took your advice, Buko, and did a Archive and Install. After much gnashing of teeth getting 10.2.5, an upgrade for Stuffit and 10.2.8, I reinstalled PS CS2 9.0 and it works. Pretty sure it’s the 9.0.1 update that screwed me up.
Thanks for your help, and I’m seriously eyeing OS 10.4 at least. Scott
Mac OS X v10.4.11 is arguably the most stable and reliable of the recent Mac OS at this time. Certainly better than v10.2.8. But you may have to buy it as "second-hand" software. Be careful where you buy.
My Problem: Freeze/lock when open file or open new.
My Solution: Right click on "START", then "EXPLORE". Select "TOOLS, then "FOLDER OPTION". Click "VIEW" tab and make sure "SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS" is checked – very very important!
Left click on "START", click "CONTROL PANEL", then select "USER ACCOUNTS". Here create a new user account called "BILLY"
Left click on "START’, click "LOG OFF" then "SWITCH USER’. Select "BILLY"
Right click on "START", then "EXPLORE". In your C drive, look for "DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS", then user "BILLY", then "APPLICATION DATA". In the "APPLICATION DATA’ copy the folder called "ADOBE" and paste in on your desktop.
Left click on "START’, click "LOG OFF" then "SWITCH USER’. Select "your account"
Right click on "START", then "EXPLORE". In your C drive, look for "DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS", then user "your account name", then "APPLICATION DATA". In the "APPLICATION DATA’ paste the new "ADOBE" the folder that you have pasted in on your desktop.
REASON WHY IT FREEZE: CORRUPTED ADOBE SETTING IN YOUR ADOBE FOLDER. BY CREATING A NEW USERS, WE ARE CREATING A NEW ADOBE SETTINGS. BY COPY AND PASTE, NOW YOU HAVE A NEW SETTINGS AND IT SHOULD NOT FREEZE OR LOCK.
Have you checked for duplicate or corrupted fonts? Have you repaired permissions? Repaired the drive? Booted off and run DiskWarrior?
Can you please tell us something about your computer model and CPU, installed RAM, hard drives and free hard drive space? How much space you’ve allocated for scratch?
Thanks for the response. OK… This is the first day I have been able to get back to the problem.
My system I am running Photoshop on is a Power Mac G4, AGP Graphics ATY Rage 128Pro chip set 16MB VRAM LCD 1280×1024 32-bit color, 500MHz, 1.75GB of memory, 1 MB L2 Cache, 100 MHz Bus Speed. I had installed the latest security update and repaired the permissions the day the problem started.
Now to day I started the system and went in and created a Guest Account. I logged into the guest account and started Photoshop. Low and behold it worked just fine. So I logged out of guest and logged into my main user account And started Photoshop. Wouldn’t you know it…. It works just fine. I can open any file I want with now problems.
I got to thinking after I had done all of this that I wished I had tried to open a file in Photoshop today prior to creating the guest account to see if it still had the problem in my main user account.
I did not change anything else on the system and all seems to work fine now. So at his point I am really not sure what the problem was.
Again thanks for taking the time to respond to this issue.
